The six member strong team from Fans' Embassy Denmark had an easy job in Ukraine. As expected the Danish fans did not cause trouble for themselves or others, and they all contributed to painting Kharkiv and Lviv red and white during the EURO. Perhaps more unexpectedly, they did not have any major problems themselves during their time in Ukraine. The most dramatic events were a lost passport and a lost wallet, both of which were returned immediately. The negative reports from the media before the EURO turned out to be unfounded, and the horror stories were replaced by fairytales.
Fans' Embassy Denmark were present in both Kharkiv and Lviv, and we were able to assist thousands of fans during the all too short time we had in Ukraine. The most asked questions were "how do we get to the stadium?" and "where can we find good food and beer?". Luckily, these questions were easy to answer and our services were greatly appreciated by the many Danish fans. We distributed hundreds of Fan Guides in English and Ukrainian and maps in Danish to fans from many different countries, and also to hundreds of locals who wanted to know more about us and the EURO. Our fanzine 'Holger' was a big success, and we handed out 4000 copies primarily to Danes, and the reception was extremely positive.
Our face painting service in Kharkiv turned out to be a huge success and a great number of fans left our Fans' Embassy with a Danish flag on the cheek.
Our collaboration with the stationary Fans' Embassies in the two cities and with our colleagues from Holland and Germany was perfect. It was a great joy to spend time with all of them, and in Lviv we organized a re-match of the EURO '92 final between Denmark and Germany – and this time the fans took to the field. As in '92 Denmark won a narrow victory (8-2!), but the result was not the most important on this lovely day. All the players and supporters had a good day out, and we all enjoyed the match, the nice weather and the chance to come together as football fans and friends.
Ukraine has left a wonderful impression on all the visiting Danish fans and also on the team from Fans' Embassy Denmark. We regret going home so early, but that is the nature of football sometimes.
We are sure that our work and the hospitality of the Ukrainian people have contributed to a great EURO, and don't worry, Ukraine – we will be back!
